Description
This file contains 4 signed typescript letters and 13 manuscript letters to Herbert Read from Marcus Brumwell, co-founder of the Design Research Unit. These letters are filled with news about family and Brumwell and Read's friends: particularly Barbara Hepworth, but also Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. In one letter Brumwell quotes from a letter he has received from Nicolson, dated 29 January 1967 in which he describes Read thus: 'he is one of the rare people of this generation with a beauty of his own, like Braque, beyond this existence.' Early letters refer to projects undertaken by Moore and Hepworth, and include a photocopy of a letter from George Ivan Smith of the United Nations to Marcus Brumwell following the death of Dag Hammarsskjold, the United Nations Secretary in an air crash in 1961.
