Description
This file contains 2 manuscript letters to Herbert Read from Alan Bowness, both requesting a reference for a position at the Tate Gallery, as Director, and as Keeper of the Tate's Modern Collection. Bowness was eventually Director of the Tate between 1980-1988. Letters also refer to a forthcoming Lund Humphries volume, to which Read is contributing an essay on Moore, and Bowness' wish to edit a series of monographs for the publisher. Photocopies of letters and associated papers from Herbert Read, Benedict Read, Alan Bowness and Professor L. D. Ettlinger are also included in the file. They include: family news; requests for slides and images, for talks and publications; correspondence about Grolier Arts for whom Read acted as an editor; a photocopy of Bowness' tribute to Herbert Read at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), 28 November 1968 'modified a bit'.
