Description
This file contains material relating to Herbert Read's 70th birthday celebrations. Read was 70 in 1963 and a dinner in his honour was given at The Arts Club. Guests who attended included Stephen Spender, Kathleen Raine, Peggy Guggenheim, Lee Miller Penrose, Roland Penrose, Barbara Hepworth, Willa Muir and Naum Gabo alongside members of Read's family.
The file includes:
A table plan for the event with guests' names
Papers signed by some of the guests
Napkins with symbols on the front and the name of one of Read's books on the back
A manuscript poem by Kathleen Raine beginning 'As a child forgotten in a room', dedicated to Herbert Read
A fair copy of a poem titled The Meaning of Life by Allen Tate
4 photographs of the event
70th birthday cards and telegrams. These include telegrams from Henry and Irina Moore; Walter and Ise Gropius and Hans Richter. Gropius' telegram reads 'Your deeds are anchored in hisotry [sic] seventy cheers for seventy years'. Richter's telegram is addresed 'To the pacemaker of the avantgarde of yesterday today and tomorrow' and ends 'congratulations and en avant'.
