Description
Material relating to Read's editorship of and involvement with the Burlington Magazine.
The Burlington Magazine is a monthly periodical devoted to the fine and decorative arts. It was established in 1903 by a group of art historians and connoisseurs that included Roger Fry, Bernard Berenson and Herbert Horne. Read was appointed as editor of the Burlington Magazine in 1933, following the editorship of Roger Fry. He remained the Editor until 1939, but continued to be closely associated with the magazine. Read served on the Editorial Board of the Burlington from 1945 until his death in 1968, including acting as Chairman.
Files principally concern the management and promotion of the magazine during the 1950s and 60s and its takeover by Thomson Publications Limited (later Thompson International) in1963. Files include business correspondence (principally from F E Hipkin), copies of minutes, financial and accountancy documents. Also includes a folder of marketing material and specimen pages. Documents are arranged in approximate chronological order.
