This file contains 1 typescript letter, 2 signed typescript letters, 1 with Herbert Read’s carbon copy response typed on verso, 3 carbon copy letters and 2 typescript documents relating to the Venice Biennale.
The majority of correspondence is to Herbert Read from Giovanni Ponti, Special Commissioner for the Venice Biennale, dated 24 Apr – 8 Aug 1959, 6ff. The letters discuss Read accepting a position as a member of the International Consulting Committee of Experts for the Biennale and suggestions of exhibitions that will be hosted.
The file also includes 1 signed typescript letter to Herbert Read from Giovanni Favaretto Fisca, Mayor of Venice and President of the Biennale, dated 24 May 1966, 2ff. In the letter Fisca asks Read to loan Naum Gabo’s ‘Construction Linéaire No. 2’ for an exhibition at the Biennale. In a carbon copy response typed on verso, dated 29 May 1968, Read declines due to the fragility of the piece, 1f.
