This file contains 7 signed typescript letters, 1 manuscript letter and 3 carbon copy letters relating to the University of Leeds.
The first signed typescript letter is to Herbert Read from Sir James Black Baillie, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, dated 26 Apr 1932, 1f. The letter notifies Read of plans to offer him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters at the forthcoming Graduation Ceremony in July 1932. In a manuscript response, dated 28 Apr 1932, Read accepts, 1f. A second signed typescript letter to Read from A. E. Wheeler, Registrar of the University of Leeds, dated 18 May 1932, also confirms the conferring of the degree, 1f.
The third signed typescript letter is to Herbert Read from Charles Morris, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds, dated 20 Mar 1959, 1f. In the letter Morris notifies Read that Maurice de Sausmarez is leaving his position as Head of the Department of Fine Art, and asks Read for suggestions to replace him. Further correspondence discusses the direction the Department should take and Read’s suggestions, 4ff.
Further typescript letters are to Herbert Read from Quentin Bell, Professor of Fine Art at the University of Leeds and Bernard W. Rozran, Professor of Fine Art at the University of Leeds, dated 22 Jun 1965 and 4 Nov 1966, 2ff. Both letters give thoughts on articles written by Read.
