Herbert Read was President of SEA from 1946 until his death in 1968.


Correspondence includes letters to Herbert Read from Alexander Barclay-Russell; Edwin Ziegfeld, Head of Department at Teachers College, Columbia University and President of INSEA from 1951-1960; Sam Black of the National Committee for the Training of Teachers; Wendy Koop, Chairman of SEA; Desmond Everett; David H. Salter, Chairman of the Central London Group; Kenneth A. Jameson, Chairman of SEA; Zed Pollen of the Joint Council for Education through Art; Dennis Young and Tony van Hoboken of ATHENE; Johan H. Langaard, Director of Oslo Municipality’s Art Collections and C. Juliet Crowther and Rachel Blake, Secretaries of SEA.


The letters discuss topics including relations between SEA and INSEA; the reprint of Read’s SEA address ‘Education through Art: A Revolutionary Policy in Art Education’ by Teachers College, Columbia University; SEA’s representation on the Sunday Pictorial Committee for the Exhibition of Children’s Art 1955; SEA’s contribution to the International Congress on Art Education in Venice, August 1961; the reorganisation of the Joint Council for Education through Art; ATHENE, the journal of SEA; Read writing an article for Oslo Municipality’s Art Collections to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch; SEA’s application to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for funding and the reprint of Read’s essay ‘The Education of Free Men’ as a SEA pamphlet.
