Description
This file contains correspondence and associated material relating to the Private Libraries Association.
The majority of correspondence is between Herbert Read and Philip Ward, Hon. Secretary of the Private Libraries Association, dated 13 Jan 1956 – 6 Oct 1962. The letters discuss Read sending Ward copies of his work including ‘Songs of Chaos’, ‘Eclogues’ and ‘Naked Warriors’; Ward wishing to publish and distribute Read’s out-of-print works including ‘Fables from Flanders’, the ‘Auguries of Life and Death’ and the four plays ‘The Parliament of Women’, ‘Aristotle’s Mother’, ‘Thieves of Mercy’ and ‘Lord Byron at the Opera’ and Ward congratulating Read on his book ‘A Concise History of Modern Painting’.
Later correspondence discusses the separate publication of ‘The Parliament of Women’ and ‘Aristotle’s Mother’, including a signed typescript memorandum of agreement to Herbert Read from Vine Press, dated 7 Nov 1958, for the publishing of ‘The Parliament of Women’, 1f.
