Description
This file contains correspondence, meeting notes and associated material relating to the International Society of Education through Art (INSEA).
Herbert Read was President of the Society of Education through Art (SEA) from 1946 until his death in 1968 and was also instrumental in establishing INSEA as an executive arm of UNESCO in 1954, later becoming Honorary President in 1960.
Correspondence includes letters to Herbert Read from Ap Boerma, 2nd Vice-President of the Council of INSEA; Charles D. Gaitskell, President of INSEA 1960-63; J A Soika, President of INSEA 1963-66; Dr. Jaromir Uzdil, President of the World Congress INSEA; Eleanor Hipwell, President of INSEA 1969-73; Betty Nickerson and Edwin Ziegfeld, former President of INSEA 1951-60 and Chairman of the Department of Fine and Industrial Arts at Teachers College of Columbia University. In a signed typescript letter to Read dated 21 Sep 1960, Gaitskell confirms Read as Honorary President of INSEA, 1f. In correspondence between Read and Boerma, dated 8 Jun – 5 Aug 1961, they discuss the death of Carl Jung and an article written by Read titled ‘Jung on Education’ for the 6th issue of the ETA, 3ff.
Also included in the file are various Council meeting notes, President’s messages to the Council, contracts between UNESCO and INSEA and associated material including; a typescript UNESCO report titled ‘The Visual Arts in General Education’, dated 12 May 1952; typescript notes for Herbert Read’s opening address of the First General Assembly of INSEA titled ‘The Future of Education’, held in Paris on 5 Jul 1954; typescript brochure from the Third General Assembly titled ‘Man and Art, East and West’, held in Manila from Aug – Sep 1960; typescript brochure for the Fourth General Assembly titled ‘Art Education for International Understanding’, held in Montreal in Aug 1963 and various typescript documents relating to the International Exhibition of Children’s Art titled ‘The Child and the World’, to be held in Prague from Oct – Nov 1964.
The file also includes both manuscript and typescript versions of an article by Herbert Read titled ‘Art Education and Our Times’, written for the INSEA Special Edition to the Congress in Tokyo, 1965 and Read’s ‘Message to the 18th INSEA World Congress’ in 1966.
