This file contains 2 signed typescript letters, both with Herbert Read’s carbon copy response typed on verso, 2 typescript letters, 1 signed typescript note, 1 carbon copy letter and 9 photographs relating to the Hanover Gallery.
The first signed typescript letter is to Herbert Read from artist Helen Ashbee, dated Mar 1965, 2ff. Ashbee encloses 9 photographs of her work for Read to look at. Read thanks her for the photographs in a carbon copy response typed on verso, dated 20 Mar 1965, 1f.
The second signed typescript letter is to Herbert Read from Harry Stearne, dated 17 Aug 1965, 1f. Read’s carbon copy response, dated 6 Sep 1965, is typed on verso, 1f. The letters discuss a lecture by Read regarding the relation of the critical writer to art.
The file also includes a signed typescript note to Herbert Read from Gottfried Honegger, dated 20 Aug 1965, 1f, enclosing letters (in German) written to Erika Brausen and Ruth Franken, 4ff. A carbon copy letter from Herbert Read to Erika Brausen, founder of the Hanover Gallery, dated 5 Sep 1965, discusses the possible exhibition of bronzes by Ruth Franken, 1f.
