This file contains correspondence relating to the Gulbenkian Foundation.
Correspondence includes 2 signed typescript letters to Herbert Read from Lord Bridges, Chairman of the Gulbenkian Foundation’s committee to research the needs of the arts in post-war Britain, dated 5 and 13 Feb 1959, 2ff. Read’s carbon copy response is dated 8 Feb 1959, 1f. The letters discuss Read giving evidence to the Gulbenkian Committee, in which he stated the importance of education in art, and Read sending Bridges a revised copy of his book ‘Education Through Art’.
The file also includes 2 signed typescript letters to Herbert Read from W. A. Sanderson, Secretary of the Gulbenkian Foundation, dated 17 Jun and 8 Jul 1959, 2ff. Read’s carbon copy response is dated 22 Jun 1959, 1f. The letters discuss the Bridges Report, which Read gives notes on, specifically about the establishment of national arts centres and grants. Read states ‘Art must be stimulated at the ‘grass roots’, and only through such stimulus can a vital national art be created’.
