Description
This file contains correspondence and associated material relating to the Guggenheim Foundation.
Correspondence includes letters to Herbert Read from James Johnson Sweeney, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, discussing topics including the interim Presidency of AICA, the lending of Naum Gabo’s works including ‘The Column’ and ‘The Spherical Theme’ to travelling exhibitions and the Guggenheim International Award. The file also includes correspondence from Lawrence Alloway, Curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and Gordon N. Ray, Associate Secretary General and later President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. In a manuscript letter to the latter, dated 16 Dec 1964, Read sends an appraisal of the poet Jonathan Williams to support his application for a Guggenheim Fellowship, 1f.
Also included in the file are correspondence and associated material relating to the Guggenheim International Award, including; a typescript letter to Herbert Read from James Johnson Sweeney, dated 14 Oct 1958, detailing the itinerary of Read’s trip to New York to be on the Jury Committee for the Prize, 2ff; typescript biographies of the Jurors (including Read), National Section Award winners, Honourable Mentions and the 1958 Guggenheim International Award winner, Joan Miro; a press release about the Award dated 17 Oct 1958; a typescript brochure for the Award and a typescript letter to Read from Sweeney, dated 24 Oct 1958, enclosing a cheque for travel expenses, 2ff.
