This file contains correspondence and associated material relating to the Covent Garden Centre.
Herbert Read was on the General Council for the Project for an International Centre in the Covent Garden Area.
Correspondence includes 7 signed typescript letters to Herbert Read from George Martin, founder of the Project for an International Centre in the Covent Garden Area, dated 9 Sep 1963 – 9 Apr 1965, 10ff. In a carbon copy response dated 11 Sep 1963, 1f, Read accepts a position on the General Council, stating that the project interests him due to a desire to eventually co-ordinate the scheme with his own plans to ‘establish an Art Centre in London’ for the Institute of Contemporary Arts.
Also included in the file are typescript lists of General Council members from Sep – Dec 1963, 3ff and 2 typescript reports titled ‘One Hundred Quotations from Correspondence Received about an International Centre in the Covent Garden Area’ and ‘Notes on a Project for an International Centre in the Covent Garden Area’.
