This series contains material relating to Herbert Read's service during the First World War, including letters, certificates, and a scrapbook with cuttings of articles and poems by Read.


Read was commissioned at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Regiment, also known as the Green Howards, in January 1915. During his time on the Western Front he was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded both the Military Cross (1917) and the Distinguished Service Order (1918).


Herbert Read is commemorated on the First World War poets' memorial in Westminster Abbey. Recollections of his war experience can be found in works including In Retreat (1925) and War Diary, included in The Contrary Experience (1963).
