Biography or history

Dorothy Una Ratcliffe (1887-1967), nee Clough, known as DUR, was a writer and poet, socialite and activist. She had two sisters, Winifred and Pauline, and a brother, Hugh, and began writing as a child. She later married Charles Frederick Ratcliffe, the nephew of the Edward Allen Brotherton, later Lord Brotherton. Dorothy supported the political career of Lord Brotherton, becoming the youngest ever Lady Mayoress in 1913, and together they collected the rare books and manuscripts that were later donated to the University.

After Lord Brotherton’s death, Dorothy divorced Charles and married Noel McGrigor-Phillips, until his death 11 years later, after which she married Alfred Charles Vowles.

There are links between this collection and the Romany Collection, which she donated to the University in 1950.
