Description
The collection contains the personal records of Jane Hamlyn. There is a substantial amount of correspondence with male friends and some miscellaneous correspondence. It contains some letters from Jane which were returned to her.
There are many personal diaries and some passports. The collection includes photographs of Jane and her friends and family photographs from the19th century. It encompasses family documents such as birth certificates and a will.
Biography or history
Jeni Enid Beauchamp Nobbs was born on 25 December 1901 in Barnet, Middlesex. Her parents were Horace Arthur Nobbs and Annie Bell Davis. Jeni was known as Jane and she also had the nickname 'Olive'. Jeni had adopted the name Jane Hamlyn by the 1930s. It is not clear whether she married someone with the surname Hamlyn, but she appears in a shipping record in 1927 as Mrs Jeni Enid Hamlyn. Jane worked as a private secretary in London for many years. She was interested in the London jazz scene in the 1930s. Jane died in London in 1997.
Provenance
Acquired in 1998 as part of the Liddle Collection, although the material contains little mention of either WW1 or WW2.
