Description

A double ikat 'Kain Geringsing' altar cloth. The cloth is made from hand spun cotton with natural dyes, with a symmetrical design in red and brown, and uncut fringes. These pieces are seen as lucky, and to ward off evil.

Geringsing textiles are celebrated because both their warp and weft threads are pre-dyed before weaving begins. Producing double ikat is an extremely slow and painstaking task and is in limited production. The resulting textiles are so delicate that they can only be used only on special occasions and in special contexts, such as in Bali where they function as altar cloths.
