Description
Cream museum exhibit card from the Department of Colour Chemistry, displaying annotated samples of dyed textiles to demonstrate the effects of exposure on the fabric. In the top section are four samples of a viscose silk casement curtain 'dyed with yellow vat dye liable to cause tendering on exposure'. These were exposed at Plymouth for 12 months from May 1931. Of the four samples, there are two which are faded, before washing and after washing; and two which are unfaded, before washing and after washing. The faded washed sample is distressed.
The lower section shows one large sample of a cotton curtain printed with vat dyes 'some of which are liable to cause tendering on exposure'. The colours in the printed cotton are dark pink, green, orange, grey, light blue, dark blue, white. The orange and yellow show particular tendering (wear). Part of the pink is also worn. Samples are attached to appertures with tape. The faded washed sample is also backed with card.
