Description
A scrapbook compiled by Louisa Pesel, possibly after her return from Athens in the first decade of the twentieth century, continuing up to her death in 1947. The album contains attached and loose items: photographs; postcards; letters; news cuttings; invitations, notices and transcripts of lectures; and advertisements for publications and classes.
Photographs include portraits of family and friends, the Greek royal family, the 1906 Olympic Games in Athens, travels in India (including materials relating to the Agra Fort and the Kyber Pass), Egypt (images of Egyptian archaeology), France and Switzerland. Images also cover her teaching of embroidery, including work with First World War soldiers and refugees.
Many of the photographs and postcards in the first nine pages of the album are accompanied by manuscript captions and quotations from Wordsworth, Gilpin and RL Stevenson.
News cuttings include the illness and subsequent death of King Edward VII in May 1910, and Louisa Pesel's obituary.
A detailed list of the contents of the scrapbook can be available on request.
