Description
Counted woolwork sample worked as a model for an altar cushion in Winchester Cathedral. The work is in red, blues, yellow, white and green wool on a neutral background, depicting an all over stylised tile design based on crosses, diamonds, s-scrolls and lozanges, with a zig zag corner border decoration. Part of the edge is worked with a tassel attached. The work is incomplete, with only one quarter of the piece completed as an example, with further areas outlined in stitch. Paper label attached. The work is described as 'Winchester embroidery'.
The geometric design is based on pattern printed in Peter Quentel's 1527 'Musterbuch für Ornamente und Stickmuster' (Sample book for ornaments and embroidery designs). A facsimilie edition was published in 1882 under the title 'New Little Pattern Book'.
