Description
Counted woolwork sample part-worked as a model for a kneeler or chair seat in Winchester Cathedral. The work is in red, blue, black/brown and green wool on a neutral background, depicting an all over tile design based on a cross against a background of crossed squares, with corner border decoration. Paper label and samples of wool attached.
The geometric design is based on pattern printed in Peter Quentel's 1527 'Musterbuch für Ornamente und Stickmuster' (Sample book for ornaments and embroidery designs). A facsimilie edition was published in 1882 under the title 'New Little Pattern Book'.
