Description
Cream museum exhibit card from the Department of Colour Chemistry, displaying 6 annotated samples of dyed silk nett primarily for mourning and coffins. Samples 1. White Crape for Coffin Linings; gauze is bleached, crimped and finished in cellulose nitrate solution. 2. Mourning Crape (black); gauze from highly twisted (thrown) warp and weft is crimped, set and dyed with Chestnut extract and Iron Pyrolignite. Finished in blue and waterproofed with formaldehyde. 3. and 4. labelled as 'Cheaper Mourning Crape'. one white and one black gauze. White gauze is dyed and weighted with a black acid dye and tannin, crimped and finished with shellac and dulling powder (Carbon Black or Logwood Black). Samples 5. and 6. Crepe de Chine (blue-grey and grey), gauze of untwisted warp and alternate two and two twisted weft clock- and anticlockwise, alternate pairs sighted with a blue acid dye, is degummed, weighted if desired, blued with an acid dye and finished. Samples are glued to apertures.
