Description

A piece of crepe [chirimen] with a purple ground and a multicoloured design of peonies, chrysanthemums and a third unknown type of flower. Patterning includes imitation tie dye effects. Both selvedges are present.

Chirimen is woven using highly twisted weft threads with each alternate thread twisting in the opposite direction. The creped effect appears after washing the fabric to remove the natural silk gum.

Chirimen was originally used as a fabric for kimonos, it is now used for dress accessories and craft items.
