Description
A notebook made by Mrs Mabel Duxbury containing textiles related notes, samples and drawings, with a late 20th century style floral plastic covering the spine. The notebook covers a range of textile techniques collected from different cultures and sources, for example film costume and fashion magazines. The first half is mainly taken up with notes, the second half is predominant attached paper clippings. Techniques include embroidery, tatting, coiled basketry, knitting, sewing and crochet. Throughout the notebook historic information as to cultural origins of style has been added. The notebook contains graph paper samples of designs, of for instance human figures and a Christmas tree for cross stitch. There are handwritten instructions for a tatted mat with an attached piece of tracing paper showing the design drawn out in steps. Further into the notebook tatting with multiple colours is covered. The notebook contains cut outs of images of embroidery, sketches of flowers and
butterflies on tracing paper, and magazine clippings, include instruction on how to make a sun top and an apron from an old shirt. The notebook also contains handwritten instructions and magazine clippings of knitting patterns. The knitting articles cover a range of techniques, including 'The Perfect Buttonhole and the 'Principles of Cable Knitting';other techniques covered are knitting tailors lines, twisted stitches, and how to achieve neat neckbands. Mrs Duxbury noted a list of books for inspirations sources throughout her notebook. There are references in the front inside cover for the Embroiderers' Guild, the Needlework Development Scheme (Glasgow), and Barnsley Girls High School. Her maiden name is also in the front cover, suggested the notebook was started before she married.
