Description

This katagami stencil, used in resist dyeing of fabric, depicts vertical stripes of: ?text, hexagon and diamond patterning, and triple lines

The stencil is constructed from several layers of hand made Japanese mulberry paper. These would have been glued together and coated with persimmon juice, ready for the design to be cut. Extra support is given to the stencil by the addition of silk threads (ito ire) sandwiched between the two layers of paper which form the stencil.

In order to achieve the pattern on the surface of the fabric, a rice paste would be applied through the stencil to provide a dye resist.
