Description
A manuscript by J.J. Hummel, and possibly also by A.E. Perkin, showing the results of dyeing experiments with plants. The names of the authors appear to be added on the first page with a different hand, possibly in more recent times (the name Perkin has a ? after it). The manuscript lists the Latin names of wild flowers (from M to Z) and contains dyeing examples for these different kinds of flowers as well as of leaves and other parts of plants. The first volume (containing the Latin names from A to L) is not extant. Glued to one of the last pages of the manuscript is an extra sheet of paper entitled "A list of some of the plants, etc, used as dyestuffs recommended by the Scotch Industries Association". It lists the plants and flowers used for the production of certain colours, such as 'For Browns', etc.
