Two indentures conveying land from Adam Baynes (of Knostrop, Leeds) to William Rookeby (of Burnby, Yorks) and William Farrer (of Ewood, Yorks), separately

Description

The earlier document conveys the manor of North Newbald, Yorkshire, confiscated from the Church, to William Rookeby for the sum of 105 pounds, 3 shillings and 6 pence, and appoints Robert Thompson of Knostrop to take possession of the land and transfer it to William Rookeby. The later document concerns royal estates forfeited to pay Parliamentary troops. William Farrer, in consideration of the sum owed to him as a late captain of horse in the Parliamentary army, is to receive rents, etc., to a certain value from the manors of Accrington and Trawden, Lancs., but Adam Baynes retains the rights to mines and woods on these properties. The manuscripts are accompanied by a letter from Miss E.G. Lupton to Mr B.S. Page, the Librarian, dated Leeds, 26 June, 1950, in which she explains how they were found


The earlier document is dated 28 April, 1651, signed W. Rokeby at the foot, has a hanging seal attached, and is endorsed Sealed and delivered in the presence of [two witnesses]. The later document is dated 28 June, 1651, signed Will: Farrer at the foot, has no seal attached, and is endorsed Sealed and delivered in the presence of [four witnesses]

Biography or history

Adam Baynes (1622-1670) was a soldier and official of the Commonwealth, and the first M.P. for Leeds. He financed many transactions for the Commonwealth, and dealt in the purchase and sale of forfeited estates
