Description
This collection comprises autograph manuscript and typescript drafts of poems, critical works and plays by Paul Mills, including 3 notebooks with drafts of plays and poetry. There are also examples of published copies of Mills' work.
Biography or history
Paul Mills, the poet, playwright and critic, was born in Cheshire in 1948 and educated at Sir John Deane's Grammar School, Northwich, and Edinburgh University. For several years following 1974 he taught English in a Birmingham Comprehensive School; he then held Writer's Fellowships at Manchester University and Christ's Hospital, Horsham (1976-1978), before becaming the last Gregory Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University [1978-1980]. He and his family lived in California during the 1980s and toured around the Western United States. After his return to England he worked as a Lecturer in the School of Literature Studies at the College of Ripon and York St. John, York. His literary output has included several published collections of poetry, starting with 'North Carriageway' (1976), several plays, and critical works. Two of his plays have been performed, at the Royal National Theatre and at West Yorkshire Playhouse, and, in 1999, he was the winner of the Poetry Business Competition. Paul

Provenance
Part of this collection was the gift of the author, Paul Mills, on 5 August 1986. The remainder was a purchase in August 2008.
