Guard book volume entitled "L. N. PYRAH PERSONALIA VOLUME 18. Urological & Surgical Research, The Medical Research Council Unit". Containing papers relating to the history of various departments at the Leeds General Infirmary [LGI]. Dated 1988 on the front cover. Includes:
- Papers relating to the Department of Surgical Research, which was set up by Leonard Braithwaite in 1925. Contains notes on the history of the department, correspondence between Braithwaite and colleagues at the LGI and University of Leeds, reports and memoranda.
- Papers relating to the Department of Virology and the Medical Research Council [MRC] Unit for the Study of Mineral Metabolism. The department was established in 1950. Contains notes on the history of the department; correspondence between Leslie Pyrah, the Leeds Regional Hospital Board and the University of Leeds, some relating to setting up a research fellowship in urology in 1951; reports; and other correspondence and papers relating to establishing the Artificial Kidney Unit in 1960, and the MRC Unit for the Study of Mineral Metabolism in 1956.
- Papers relating to the building of the Wellcome Wing, including introductory text relating to securing funding from the Wellcome Trust, and a report on the equipment required for the new building [1950-1960].
- Papers relating to the MRC Unit and the Artificial Kidney Unit, including official correspondence; reports, including a progress report for the MRC, 1956-1960; and a copy of a lecture by Frank Parsons on the artificial kidney, 1984.
- Papers relating to the appointment of Dr B.E.C Nordin as successor to Pyrah in the directorship of the MRC Unit, in 1963. Mainly contains correspondence relating to handover information, up to 1964.
- Papers relating to the closure of the MRC Unit in 1986. Includes reports, press cuttings, corrrespondence, and Pyrah's letter of protest to the closure sent to the MRC.
