Description

Scrapbook volume labelled "L.N. PYRAH VOL.I", containing papers relating to Leslie Pyrah's personal life and early career.

This includes his family life, school years, medical training at the University of Leeds, Pyrah's hospital residency and time as Surgical Tutor, covering aspects of his work as House Surgeon to Professor Carlton Oldfield up until his appointment as Consultant Surgeon in June 1934. There are also further personal and professional papers up until 1973, which relate to Pyrah's involvement with various societies and organisations, including Zetland Lodge.

The volume begins with an introduction to how Pyrah has assembled his papers with brief explanatory notes. It has then been arranged into sections as follows:

"1. Early years to 1919 [pp. 4-25]

2. Student years 1919 to 1925 [pp. 26-45]

3. Hospital Resident to Surgical Tutor [pp.46-124]

4. Family [pp. 125-151]

5. Masonic activities: Zetland Lodge [pp.152-188]

6. Various papers [pp. 189-210]"

There are pages of detailed autobiographical information throughout the volume to preface the different sections. The general content of this volume includes personal and professional correspondence; lecture notes; press cuttings; piano examination mark sheets; event programmes; photographs; Pyrah's National Registration Identity Card [1940]; references and personal testimonies for Pyrah; certificates; annual reports for various societies; and memoranda.

In addition, the volume contains annual reports, press cuttings and papers relating to Pyrah's work in founding and administering the Leeds Blood Transfusion Service, from 1931. It also contains correspondence with Sir Berkeley Moynihan (1865-1936), mainly relating to referring patients to Pyrah at the Leeds General Infirmary.
