Description

Manuscript letter signed by Ferdinando Fairfax. The letter details the activities of the Earl of Newcastle's 'popish' army in Leeds and Bradford; outlines the circumstances of the defeat of Newcastle's army at Bradford on 18 Dec, and requests money to help pay for soldiers. Also contains a postscript with details of an attack on Fairfax's forces at Brayton.


The letter dated 29 December 1642 was presented to Parliament and read in both houses on 4 January 1643.


Also includes a transcription, a list of divergences between the manuscript letter and the printed tract of January 1643, and a photocopy of a letter from the Assistant Clerk of the Records at the House of Lords Record Office [21 Aug 1978].
