Biography or history

Trainee Health Visitors had attended lectures in the Department of Public Health since the early 20th century, shared with the Diploma in Public Health students. By 1926 the course had become formalised with student Health Visitors being full University students. To qualify, they took examinations to obtain the Certificate in Health Visiting, originally examined by the Royal Sanitary Institute. The course moved to the new Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in 1948.

When the Royal Sanitary Institute syllabus was changed to the new Council for the (Education and) Training of Health Visitors syllabus in 1965, the University became a validating body for the UK Health Visitors Certificate qualification. The University decided to close the course in 1989; after which a training course for Health Visitors opened at Leeds Polytechnic (now Leeds Beckett University).
