Description

Papers, correspondence and pamphlets relating to the Christian Socialist movement of the early twentieth century, collected by Reverend Paul Stacy. Primarily, this collection concerns the League of the Kingdom of God, which Rev. Stacy had an active part in, but there is also reference to the Christian Socialist League and other Church Socialist organisations, such as the Guild of St Matthew.

Biography or history

The Church Socialist League was founded in 1906 by Conrad Noel, Percy Widdrington and Walter Frere. It was part of the emerging Christian Socialist Movement, with strong links to the rise of the Labour Party. After the dissolution of the Church Socialist League, Percy Widdrington and colleagues established the League of the Kingdom of God around 1922.
Reverend Paul Stacy was actively involved in the Christian Socialist movement alongside his post as vicar at St Peter's, Hillfields, Coventry. He worked as Secretary for the League of the Kingdom of God.
