Contains the papers of Professor Derek R. Wood, produced during his time as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
The first three sub-series [LUA MED/3/4/1-3] contain papers and plans relating to the building of the new Medical and Dental School; to the Multidiscipline Laboratories; and to the role of St James's Hospital as a teaching hospital with its Clinical Sciences Building. This includes papers relating to the issue of increased numbers of medical students with the new building.
The files which formed the second accrual [LUA MED/3/4/4-12] also contain some papers of Professor J. S. Scott and Professor Monty S. Losowsky, both Deans of the School of Medicine [between 1986-1989 and 1989-1994 respectively].
Biography or history
Professor Derek R Wood (d. 1997), was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine between 1969 and 1986. He had started his career at Leeds as Professor of Pharmacology in 1960 and was Head of the Department of Pharmacology.
System of arrangement
With the first accrual [ref: LUA MED/3/4/1-3], the papers were received by the University Archive in 10 boxes, with their contents then transferred to 30 archive boxes. A box list was created in September 1990, arranging the papers under three main headings:
1. Multidiscipline Laboratories
2. St James’s Hospital/Clinical Sciences Building
3. New Medical School/Student Numbers
The boxes were then given a number made up of: the section number, a decimal point, followed by the running number of boxes. The papers have been kept in the original order they were received in.
The second, separate accrual of papers was originally split over 11 boxes. These have been listed after the first accrual, maintaining the original order of the listing [ref: LUA MED/3/4/4-12].
