Biography or history

The Gypsy Lore Society was founded in 1888 and after some interuptions and revivals was consistently in operation from 1922-1974. The Journal was published in four series up to 1982. Instrumental in this was Dora Yates, who had been involved with production of its Journal from 1907 to her death in 1974.

The period after her death (1974) saw various efforts to continue the Society and publication of its journal. Angus Fraser as Assistant Editor of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society from (c.1956-1973), HJ Francis as the Treasurer and Richard Wade as Hon. Assistant Secretary were involved in many of these discussions with other such as C.A Beresford Webb. The changes came in the form of a new committee, establishment of regional chapters,(including the North American Chapter) and publication of a 4th series of the Journal (1974-1982) of which Fraser became a member of the advisory board. Until 1989 its headquarters remained in the UK at which time it moved to the USA.
