Features

Bindings

Early sixteenth-century binding of half calf over wooden boards. The spine has two raised bands either side of which are blind-tooled triple fillets and two circles enclosing flowers. The leather on the upper and lower covers is blind-tooled with triple fillets and stylised foliage. The pastedowns are leaves from another early printed book. Both the head and tail of the spine have been mended. At the head of the spine are the remains of a paper label with writing in ink manuscript, now indistinct. The upper and lower boards are fastened together with a single decorated metal clasp with the catch on the upper board. Size: 208 x 150mm. Leaf size: 203 x 138mm.

Provenance

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the title page opposite the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
