Features

Occasional marginal annotations in early ink manuscript, mostly faded or washed.

The woodcut initial on a2r has been painted in red, yellow and blue.

The major initials on f1v, h7r, h8v, K1v, L1v, N7v, N8v, S5r, S6r, V8r and X8r are decorated in red and blue with pen ornamentation extending down the margins.

Other major initials supplied alternately in red and blue.

Capital strokes and paragraph markers supplied in red.

Wanting the final blank leaf.

Bindings

Eighteenth-century binding of full citron goatskin over pasteboard. The upper and lower covers are decorated with an identical design comprising a gold-tooled border with a repeating pattern of scrolls and squares and a blind-tooled panel decorated with scrolls containing a central gold-tooled motif in the shape of an eight-pointed star. The spine has six raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Iamblichus De mysteriis. The other panels are gold-tooled with a border of fillets inside which are scrolls and fleurons. The book has marbled paper pastedowns featuring the comb and and curl patterns in red, yellow, blue and cream. The turn-ins are blind-tooled with a repeating pattern of flowers and the board edges are gold-tooled with a repeating pattern of scrolls and squares. The book has gilt edges and a green silk ribbon register. Size: 326 x 230mm. Leaf size: 312 x 215mm.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front free endpaper. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
