Features

Copious marginal annotations to the Gospels in black ink manuscript.


A leaf of closely-written black ink manuscript, in the same hand as the marginal annotations, has been inserted before the first printed leaf.


The initial Q on the first printed leaf (Ee2r) is set within a square of gold and decorated with the symbols of the Four Evangelists in colour with highlights in gold. A border of stylised foliage in gold and colours extends a third of the way down the inner margin.


Major initials supplied alternately in red and blue.


Paragraph markers supplied in red and blue.

Bindings


Binding of half pigskin over wooden boards, rebacked. The new spine has four raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Nicholas de Lyra postils (New Testament). Gold-tooled at the base of the spine are the place and date: Venice 1481. In the fourth panel is the Brotherton Collection stamp in gold. The pigskin is stamped with a repeating pattern of stylised foliage where it meets the wooden boards. Size: 315 x 226mm. Leaf size: 304 x 212mm.

Provenance

Written in black ink manuscript at the base of leaf Ee1: de la libreria del convento de [...] San Antonio de Ubeda.


Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
