Bindings

Nineteenth-century binding of full green goatskin by Koehler whose name is gold-tooled at the base of the spine. The upper and lower covers are gold-tooled with a border and frame of single and double fillets joined at the corners with double fillets. The spine has six raised bands each gold-tooled with a single fillet. Gold-tooled in the second panel is the name: Lucanus. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine is the date: 1498. The remaining six panels are decorated with a gold-tooled border of double fillets containing a central fleuron surrounded by stylised foliage. The turn-ins are gold-tooled with a repeating pattern of fleurons and the book has gilt edges. The pastedowns are of marbled paper featuring the comb pattern in pink, yellow, green, blue and cream. Size: 324 x 225mm. Leaf size: 316 x 215mm.

Written in black ink manuscript at the top of the recto of the inserted leaf preceeding A1: Codex monasterij sancti mathie apostoli. Lucanus poeta. Cu[m] co[m]me[n]tarijs Joannis Sulpicij Verulami et Omniboni placetini.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
