Bindings
Nineteenth-century binding of full dark brown goatskin. The upper and lower covers are gold-tooled with a border of triple fillets and a frame of double fillets with a fleuron at each corner. The spine has five raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Iginii Poeticon Astronomicon. The other panels contain gold-tooled ornamentation within a frame of double fillets. The board edges are gold-tooled with double fillets and the turn-ins with a repeating pattern of fleurons. There are pastedowns of marbled paper featuring the curl pattern in red, yellow, green, blue and cream. The head-edge is gilt and the book has a green silk ribbon register. Size: 186 x 133mm. Leaf size: 182 x 125mm.
Provenance
Coloured armorial bookplate of Lord Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired after 17 June 1929 when Sir Edward Allen Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
