Bindings
Late-fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century binding of dark brown calf over wooden boards, rebacked. The upper and lower covers are blind-toooled with an identical design comprising a border and frame of double fillets outside which is a repeating design resembling a twisted strand. Blind-tooled in a central panel inside triple fillets are circles containing roses, the Lamb of God and the IHS monogram surrounded by stylised foliage. The new spine has six raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Opera diui Hieronvmin. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine is the date: 1498. There is evidence of metal furniture having once been attached to both the upper and lower boards at the corners of the blind-tooled panel and at the centre. On the board edges are the remains of two decorated metal clasps with the catch on the upper board. Protective edge guards are nailed to the head and tail corners of the upper and lower covers and the spine shoulders, bent around the board
edges. Along the fore-edge are tabs, some with knots, indicating the start of each new section of the book. Size: 363 x 241mm. Leaf size: 343 x 231mm.
Provenance
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
