Mainly contains references supplied to Walter Henry Brown for use in various job applications, including at the Leeds General Infirmary, the Leeds Public Dispensary, and at the Medical School at the Yorkshire College (later the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Leeds).
The letters are from a number of different people, including: Bowater John Vernon; Arthur Fergusson McGill; John Deakin Heaton; Samuel Hey; Charles R.B. Keetley; Thomas Pridgin Teale; Clifford Allbutt; Sir Thomas Stevenson; Thomas Scattergood; and Nathaniel Garland Keirle.
Biography or history
Walter Henry Brown (1851-1907), FRCS, was a surgeon from Leeds. He studied at Leeds Grammar School before beginning his medical training at the Leeds School of Medicine.
He held various posts at the Leeds General Infirmary, going from assistant resident medical officer (1877-1878) to assistant surgeon (1884) before becoming surgeon between 1890-1906. He also worked at the West London Hospital and the Leeds Public Dispensary. In addition, Brown was Demonstrator of Anatomy of the Leeds School of Medicine, between 1882-1887.
