Comprises the original autograph manuscript of Eiríkr Magnússon's English translation of the Icelandic (Old Norse) Saga 'The Story of Olaf the Holy' with thousands of manuscript alterations and corrections in the autograph of William Morris, together with over 150 lines of English poetry added in the latter's hand, all apparently to be dated 1891.
The folio volume is bound in green cloth with a half leather black spine which bears gold-tooled lines and gilt lettering on the spine which reads, 'Morris/ and/ Magnusson/ Original/ M.S./ Story of/ Olaf the Holy/ 1891', and is held in a custom-made box covered in brown cloth with gilt lettering on the spine corresponding to that on the volume inside. There is green marbling on both inside covers and end-papers.
Biography or history
William Morris (1834-1896), the poet, artist, manufacturer, and socialist. For fuller details of his life and achievements see the Dictionary of National Biography. He and Eiríkr Magnússon (1833-1913), the translator, collaborated to translate many of the Icelandic (Old Norse) Sagas into English.
