Description
Letters and postcards, including photocopies of 22 items from Jethro Bithell to Wilhelm Lehmann.
This inventory supplements that prepared by Dr J S Andrews (2nd edition, 1967) which listed correspondence and other materials bequeathed to the University of Leeds by Jethro Bithell, formerly head of the Department of German at Birkbeck College, London (Special Collections MS 199). This further collection of material was mostly presented by Mrs Bithell, Jethro's widow, through the good offices of Professor Alexander Gillies, and was received on several occasions up to April 1972. A few letters were presented by Professor Gillies personally; the collection also includes photocopies of letters from Bithell to Wilhelm Lehmann, kindly supplied on an exchange basis by the Deutsches Literaturarchiv at Marbach-a.-Neckar. The letters are listed below generally in the same manner as in the previous handlist except that each has been given a serial number for more ready identification. The arrangement of the material by language, in the archive itself, has been discontinued. Correspondents marked
with an asterisk in the list below also appear in the previous inventory. All the letters are holograph, comprise one folio and were written to Jethro Bithell unless otherwise stated. The second part of this inventory lists photographs, miscellaneous papers and various fragments belonging to Bithell but received detached from any letters. They are mostly arranged under the names of their writers. Compiled by P S Morrish March 1976. Digitised July 2004
Biography or history
Jethro Bithell was Head of the Department of German at Birkbeck College from 1910 until his retirement in 1938. An obituary notice appeared in 'The Times' for 6 March 1962
System of arrangement
The MS 386 catalogue is based on an historic inventory, created in 1976. The arrangement of material does not necessarily represent the original order of the archive and it is considered partly processed by an archivist. When making requests to consult, please be aware that there may be discrepancies between description and physical arrangement. The retrievable unit for this collection is item level.
