Description
These papers were presented to the Library in the session 1972-1973 through the generosity of Mrs E M Weir, Sir Linton's secretary.
The following papers are divided into five sections. The first contains material on the discussions between the Press Council and the medical profession in 1955 and 1956, on the release of medical information to the press, occasioned by the birth of Siamese twins in Yorkshire. The second contains material relating to the Press Council's investigation of the conduct of representatives of the British press in the hospital at Munich after the air-crash involving members of the Manchester United Football Club (1958). The other three sections contain miscellaneous papers by Sir Linton and various other items referring to the press.
Sir Linton's name is abbreviated to 'LA' in the entries which follow; the other abbreviations are conventional. All the documents are original type-scripts (top copy) unless otherwise stated.
Biography or history
William Linton Andrews was born in Hull in 1886 and educated at Hull Grammar School and Christ's Hospital. He worked on a number of (mostly provincial) newspapers, and was editor of the 'Leeds Mercury' from 1923 until it amalgamated with the 'Yorkshire Post' in 1939, when he succeeded Arthur Mann as editor of the 'Yorkshire Post, retiring in 1960. He was a member of the Press Council and was knighted in 1954
