The letter is to an unnamed recipient, referring to a letter from the king of England (in fact James Francis Edward Stuart, the 'Old Pretender'), and commenting on the intrigues of Mme de Hatcher.

Biography or history

James Fitz-James, the natural son of King James II and Arabella Churchill, was born at Moulins in France in 1670. He was created Duke of Berwick in 1687. From 1689 to 1690 he fought in Ireland against William III, and then served for the rest of his very successful military career as an officer in the French army. He became a Maréchal de France in 1706, and in 1733 was put in command of the French army of the Rhine, but died in battle at Philipsbourg the following year. He did not involve himself in the political intrigues of his half-brother, the 'Old Pretender'.
