Description

These papers were received in February 1975 from Mrs Sarah G Graham, a member of the Harvey family acting under the will. In the main, they consist of manuscripts (or typescripts with manuscript emendations) of talks and lectures on philosophical and religious subjects. There is some purely literary material as well. This accession represents a portion only of the papers which survived, and, after working through them for this inventory, one can well sympathise with the despairing notes which appears on some folders: 'incomplete', 'incomplete and unsortable', ‘unsorted and unsortable’. By no means all problems can be resolved, and the fragments and incomplete items form a considerable portion of the whole, as will be seen. There is little here to throw light on the history and activities of a family which over the last century has played a significant role in the cultural and nonconformist life of Leeds and supported many "good causes" and philanthropic and educational ventures in the
city and beyond. From the time when William Harvey served on the city council in the 80s and 90s of the 19th century, until the 50s and 60s of the 20th, when (alone after the death of Dr T E Harvey in 1955) Professor John Harvey maintained the family support for the Headingley Orphan Homes, the Liberal Party, and Swarthmore Educational Centre, Harvey family engagement in Leeds life has been significant and sustained. W P Harvey's We Were Seven, 1936 gives an engaging (and entertaining with a Lytton Stracheyesque-flavoured) picture of family life as seen by one of the brothers. The Library is very glad to receive these papers, which join under our roof a considerable number of printed books which have been received at various times from the late Dr T E Harvey and Professor John Harvey during their lifetimes, and the following more formal accessions: 1934. From the Library of the lave William Harvey. Presented by his family. [This gift was made after the death of Mrs A M Harvey.] 1955 The
Bequest of Dr Thomas Edmund Harvey. 1971 The Gift of Mrs Phyllis M Harvey. 1973 The Bequest of Mrs Phyllis M Harvey.

The collection comprises some 2672 manuscript and typescript sheets, together with a handful of printed pamphlets, press-cuttings, and letters. In this inventory the division of material has been made broadly as follows; 1. Diary, essays, etc. 2. Printed items 3. Letters 4. Press-cuttings (in envelope) 5. University of Leeds items 6. Pierre Ceresole (1879-1945) 7. Society of Friends 8. Literary manuscripts 9. Manuscripts (critical, philosophical, religious) 10. Typescripts (with MS corrections, etc) 11. Typescript papers 12. Friends of Finchden Manor Trust (John W Harvey, chairman.
