Description
Artists' book published in conjunction with the exhibition "Inside cover", held at the London Print Studio 22 Sept. - 11 Nov. 2000.
Book "is a wallpaper sample-book. Printed on three different tones of the same paper stock and bound laterally by two bookscrews, the patterns divide into three distinct design categories: dot-to-dot, notations and colouring-in. It is both a book and an invitation for collaboration between the artists and an unknown third party. Based on children's join-the-dots books, the first section offers enormous variations within a geometric structure. Ranging from the enigmatic single dot to the infinite pattern combinations produced within an entire wall of numbered points, an individual response is encouraged. The notation section transforms the wall space into an area for writing personal letters, diary pages, thoughts or musical scores. The wallpaper therefore becomes a semi-public venue for a normally private form of expression. The final section recalls childhood memories of colouring-in books. In this case the outlines of flowers, picture frames, landscapes and portraits await completion. All
of the designs have the added attraction of being printed to order, for example the client can choose the height at which the horizon within a landscape is hung around the room" -- University of the West of England website.
Book "was conceived while Chris Taylor was assisting Craig Wood in the production of a 'Welsh Heritage' wallpaper for his installation at the Centre for Visual Arts in Cardiff in 1999. Their time together was spent discussing other creative possibilities for wallpaper and its role within both public and domestic spaces. What emerged was an interactive product; one which actively encouraged children and adults alike to personalise their environment by writing and drawing on the walls" -- University of the West of England website.
