Three-volume manuscript book, surveying English common law. Vol. I (vi, 408, [8] pp.): Actions upon torts (slander, malicious prosecution, assault & battery, false imprisonment, negligence, adultery, deceit, trover & bankruptcy, detinue, replevin, rescous, misbehaviour in office). Vol. II (viii, 409-988, [8] pp.): Actions upon real property (trespass, ejectment, right, formedon, dower, waste, assize & novel disseisin, quare impedit, action of account, assumpsit, covenant, debt. Vol. III (viii, 989-1300, [8 pp.]): Actions given by statute (hue & cry, tithes, trade, actions upon penal statutes) and various writs and other matters (mandamus, quo warranto, inquisitions, prohibitions, juries, continuance, demurrer, exception, amendment, verdict & new trial costs).

Biography or history

John Stanhope was the eldest son of John Stanhope of Horsforth and his wife, Mary, daughter of Sir William Lowther of Swillington, Yorkshire. He matriculated at University College, Oxford, in 1720 and in the same year was called to the bar at Gray's Inn, and later served as Recorder of Doncaster, from 1766 to 1769. He married Barbara, daughter of John Cockroft but died without issue in 1769
