Biography or history

Bowater John Vernon (1837-1901) was an ophthalmic surgeon from Sussex. He spent much of the rest of his career at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, first as a student and later Demonstrator of Anatomy in 1864. He also practiced at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital at this time, and ophthalmology was to become his specialism.

He was Ophthalmic Surgeon to the West London Hospital for 27 years, as well as for the Great Northern Hospital. He was also an original member of the Ophthalmological Society, which was founded in 1880.
